Jacob & Josef Kohn — father and son, founders of the company with the motto "to be one step ahead" — were the main competitors of Gebrüder Thonet in the production of bentwood furniture in 19th-century Vienna.

Original finish. Authentic impressed J. & J. Kohn mark. Natural patina consistent with age and use. Both chairs in matching condition.

Works by Jacob & Josef Kohn are held today in leading museums worldwide - the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, and the Disseny Hub Barcelona. During the First World War, price wars erupted between manufacturers. The company Mundus became a majority shareholder of J. & J. Kohn, and in 1922–23 a merger with Thonet took place, giving birth to Thonet-Mundus. After this merger, J. & J. Kohn never produced furniture under its own name again. The embossed sunburst pattern on the seat is a characteristic detail that helps date the chair and distinguish it from later pieces produced after the merger.
