Joseph Hoffmann is an Austrian architect and designer, one of the key representatives of the Vienna Secession and the founder of the Upper Austria Art and Industrial Association (later - the Wiener Werkstätte). His activities significantly influenced the development of interior design, furniture and decorative arts in the 20th century. He actively collaborated with the Gebrüder Thonet company, known for the production of bent furniture.

Created by Josef Hoffmann in 1906, the Herbstblatt drawing (translated from German Autumn Leaf) has a square grid, a certain frame, as its basis. Ordered rows of hemispheres and small straight lines are woven into this grid-frame. Combining, these elements form rows of stylized plant leaves, drawing the viewer, whose eye is forced to move, into an optical illusion. The stylistics of the pattern still reflects the combination of plant and geometric forms, still retaining the last remnants of the natural. Later, Hoffmann's drawings will begin to be dominated by the “square style” and a strict contrasting palette, close to black and white.

All necessary restoration work was carried out on the wooden part, as well as research and reupholstery work with new fabric matching the original. Jacquard fabric from the Austrian factory Backhausen was used for the restoration.
