Mundus was formed in 1907 when Leopold Pilzer merged sixteen smaller bentwood furniture manufacturers into a single joint-stock company in Vienna, Austria. The company quickly became one of the major competitors to Thonet and J. & J. Kohn in the Austro-Hungarian bentwood furniture market. In 1914 Mundus acquired a majority stake in J. & J. Kohn, and in 1922 merged with Gebrüder Thonet to form the publicly traded company Thonet-Mundus.

The chair features a distinctive oval solid-wood medallion back with a central oval cutout - a refined Secessionist decorative motif balancing geometry and restraint. The flat pressed-wood seat and bentwood legs with curved front stretcher are characteristic of Mundus production from the pre-merger period.

The presence of the original paper label bearing the double-headed Austro-Hungarian imperial eagle confirms manufacture before 1918, most likely 1907–1914.
